Hello world!

January 27, 2010

I started this blog because I became aware of the lack of Made in USA clothing in my favorite shops and wanted others to know it as well. It has become quite a hassle trying to buy clothes made in this country of ours.  Too many clothes are made elsewhere.  This is to the detriment of the American clothing industry.

Just 10 years ago, I remember seeing many commercials for clothing proudly touting the Made In USA label.  I found that this proud and wonderful label has become extinct in many large fashion houses and department stores.  I am lucky enough to have found small boutiques which still carry this label but they are few and far between.  I have also found clothes that carry the Made In USA label are of excellent quality and last many years.  Part of this is because American clothing manufacturers face much stricter regulation over the quality of their clothes than their foreign counterparts.  This is also because in my opinion, Americans are proud to make fine clothes that last many seasons and serve many purposes.

The downfall in the US economy coincided with the transfer of jobs in the clothing industry to foreign companies.  This left skilled American clothing workers without jobs, hopes or prospects.  Instead, clothes made in foreign lands are created by workers who are tortured, beaten and paid poorly for their efforts.  Americans would never stand for this kind of treatment but foreign clothing makers often are too afraid of their corrupt governments and employers to complain.  I hope to let everyone know that every time  they choose to buy a garment made in a foreign country, they are unwitting participants in upholding the violent and degrading manner that foreign clothing makers are subjected to.

Although the problem is far reaching, I believe that by educating more and more Americans of the problem, the American clothing industry and the jobs they create can be restored to help bring our great country back on its feet.  In truth, only a few committed leaders in such a movement can enroll the rest of us to follow suit. I hope to become one of those leaders.

“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has” – Margaret Mead
